DMX: Rapper in ‘grave condition’ after drug overdose triggers heart attack, report says
DMX is in critical condition after taking a drug overdose, it has been reported.
The rapper, 50, is believed to have been rushed to a New York hospital on Friday (2 April), with sources claiming the overdose triggered a heart attack.
According to TMZ, the rapper has “some brain activity”, but the source described him as being in a “vegetative state”.
Following the news, figures from the world of rap, including Missy Elliott and Rick Ross, led “prayers” to the star.
DMX – real name Earl Simmons – is one of the biggest rap stars to have emerged from the 1990s.
In the US, his first five albums, including the 1998 debut It's Dark and Hell Is Hot, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The rapper has also appeared in numerous films, including action thrillers Romeo Must Die (2000), Exit Wounds (2001) and Cradle 2 the Grave (2003).
DMX has previously spoken about his addiction to crack cocaine, which he said began when he was 14. He has been in and out of rehab over the years, the most recent time occurring in 2019 when he checked himself in.
At the time, DMX’s team released a statement reading: “In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility. He apologises for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support.”
He went on to address his time there during his first performance after checking out in December 2019.
“When you fall down, get back up. Everyone here has been through some s***, and you never know what God is willing to do for you until you need him to do something for you,” he told fans at the Las Vegas show.
In 2013, he told American TV personality Dr Phil that he was “always going to be an addict until I die”, two years after he claimed to have “let the cocaine go” so he could focus on raising his children.
During the interview, he said he still smokes marijuana “every once in a while”.
DMX has recently been working on his ninth record, a follow-up to 2012’s Undisputed.
The Independent has contacted DMX’s representatives for comment.

Covid vaccine side effects: AstraZeneca jab may cause six body disturbances
More than one in 1,000 people may experience six specific side effects of the AstraZeneca jab. As it stands, more than 30 million people have had their first dose of the Covid vaccine; the over-40s will be next in line. The Health Service Executive has listed swollen lymph glands as "rare", but it can occur. The NHS explained that swollen glands "are a sign the body is fighting an infection".
In terms of the Covid vaccine, it would mean your body is learning to defend itself against the deadly virus.
Tender, swollen lymph glands can be felt:
- On each side of the neck
- Under the chin
- In the armpits
- Around the groin
Swollen glands should go down in two weeks, and you can help ease this uncomfortable side effect by:
- Resting
- Drinking plenty of fluids
- Taking painkillers
Another "rare" body disturbance from the AstraZeneca jab is a rash on the skin.
People who are administered the jab may experience "sweating", "sleepiness", "dizziness" and/or "reduced appetite".
These side effects are expected to be "short term", but if you're concerned about the length of time you've had any of them, do call your GP.
More common side effects of the jab include:
- Feeling tired
- Tenderness, bruising, pain, redness or itching in the arm where they had the vaccine injection
- Headache
- Muscle pain
- Joint pain
- Nausea, diarrhoea or vomiting
- Fever
These side effects are more common in those aged 64 and younger, affecting more than one in 10 people.
In addition, these side effects tend to be more pronounced after the first dose of the vaccine.
Right now, anybody aged 50 or older is eligible for a Covid vaccine for free on the NHS.
People under 50 may have to wait till May to be eligible for their first Covid vaccine - if they don't fall into the other eligible groups.
The other eligible groups:
- Frontline health and social care staff
- Clinically extremely vulnerable
- Over 16s with health conditions that put them at increased risk from Covid
- Adult carers of disabled people
- Younger adults in care homes
- Over 55s
- Elderly care home residents
The next lot of people will be vaccinated in order of the following age brackets:
- 40-49 years
- 30-39 years
- 18-29 years
Risk is closely linked to someone's age, hence the UK government's decision to roll-out the vaccine in the way it has.
In addition, as teachers work with young people, those in the profession will not be pushed up the priority list if no other conditions apply.
The aim is to have everybody over the age of 18 vaccinates by July 31.
As well as the AstraZeneca jab, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has also been administered to the population.
Another vaccine - the Moderna jab - has also been approved for use in the UK.
All vaccines have been shown to provide good protection against severe disease from Covid.
Anybody showing signs of Covid are advised to book a test and to self isolate:
- A new continuous cough
- A high temperature
- A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

More than one million people in the UK could have ‘long Covid’ - poll
More than one million people in the UK could have ‘long Covid’ - poll
More than one million people in Britain could be suffering from ‘long Covid’, according to new research from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
It is estimated that 1.1 million people had ongoing persistent and debilitating symptoms in the month leading up to March 6, having tested positive for coronavirus in the previous three months.
The figures raise concerns that the true number of people suffering from long-lasting symptoms is much higher than previous estimates.
Long Covid can include fatigue, muscle pain and breathlessness, as well as difficult concentrating, also referred to as ‘brain fog’. It can also cause internal organ damage in severe cases.
The survey found the disease continued to affect 674,000 people on a daily basis, while a further 200,000 people said they were severely limited to carry out normal activities.
It is estimated that almost 700,000 people reported having a Covid in the previous three months, while 70,000 said it was over a year since they tested positive, the ONS said.
Ben Humberstone, ONS head of health analysis and life events, said: “The Office for National Statistics estimates that over a million people in the UK were reporting symptoms associated with long Covid at the beginning of March 2021, with over two-thirds of these individuals having had, or suspecting they had, Covid-19 at least 12 weeks earlier.
“An estimated 674,000 people reported that their symptoms have negatively impacted on their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities.
“People who tested positive for Covid-19 are around eight times more likely to suffer prolonged symptoms than observed in the general population.”
People aged between 35 and 69, women and those living in deprived areas were among those most likely to self-report as having long Covid.
More women (14.7 per cent) were also found to have ongoing symptoms three months later than men, which was just 12.7 per cent. The highest was among 25-34 year-olds.
The ONS said: “These estimates provide a measure of the prevalence of self-reported long Covid across the whole population, and reflect both the risk of being infected with coronavirus and the risk of developing long Covid following infection. ”
Stay alert to stop coronavirus spreading - here is the latest government guidance. If you think you have the virus, don't go to the GP or hospital, stay indoors and get advice online. Only call NHS 111 if you cannot cope with your symptoms at home; your condition gets worse; or your symptoms do not get better after seven days. In parts of Wales where 111 isn't available, call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. In Scotland anyone with symptoms is advised to self-isolate for seven days. In Northern Ireland, call your GP.
