How Meningitis Spreads
The spread of meningitis depends on the type:
-
Bacterial meningitis(e.g., Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae) is highly contagiousand spreads through respiratory
-
droplets or salivaduring coughing,
-
sneezing, kissing, or close living conditions like dorms or military barracks. Carriers may be asymptomatic but still transmit the bacteria.
-
Sharing drinks, utensils, cigarettes,
-
or vapes can also increase risk.Viral meningitisis usually less severe and can spread through respiratory secretions or fecal contamination, depending on the virus.
-
-
Fungal and parasitic meningitisare rare and generally not contagiousfrom person to person.2
-
Noninfectious meningitiscaused by drugs, cancer, or autoimmune conditions is not contagious.2
Close, prolonged contact—such as living in the same household, sharing a kitchen, or intimate contact—significantly increases the risk of -
transmission for bacterial meningitis.2
-
Prevention
-
Vaccinationis the most effective protection against bacterial meningitis, including MenB, MenACWY, and Hib vaccines.2
-
Good hygiene: frequent handwashing, avoiding sharing cups, utensils, or personal items, and covering the mouth when
-
coughing or sneezing.2
-
Prompt medical attention: If exposed to someone with bacterial meningitis, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.2
